Esprit de corpse? Canadian puts French village through Halloween bootcamp

Jeremy Mercer in Ottawa in 2007

Jeremy Mercer says getting children in the village of Saint Maime in the south of France motivated to trick or treat last Halloween was easy enough. Getting them to trick or treat properly, however, was another matter.

"They moved as one pack from house to house," recalls the Canadian author and journalist, who moved from Ottawa and quickly discovered the spooky North American tradition had not taken hold in his new locale.

"You had this seething mass of [40] kids chanting 'Les bonbons! Les bonbons!'" he told CBC Radio's All in a Day. The result, said Mercer, was more frightening for the homeowners who had agreed to participate.

Despite that, Mercer — himself an avid enthusiast of the holiday — said the reaction from the community was positive, so this year he has organized three separate departure points and said the departure times of the children will be staggered.

Mercer said over the last three weeks he's been able to train the children on the proper etiquette.

"We're on track for better trick or treating," he said.

Mercer said the late-night festivities have been successful in part because La Toussaint — or All Saints' Day — on Nov. 1 is a public holiday in France. But while Halloween was introduced to the country decades earlier, it's been slow to catch on.

That's why he says he's keeping it simple.

"Canada has room for ironic costumes… but here we have to be just straight up vampire, ghost, monster," he said.

"Maybe year-four or year-five we'll get ironic with the 'cereal killer' stabbing a box of cereal, that sort of thing, but for now we just want [to] stay on message," he said.

Daniel Radcliffe raps like Blackalicious on Tonight Show

Written By Unknown on Kamis, 30 Oktober 2014 | 22.56

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe cast a spell over The Tonight Show audience Tuesday night with a show-stopping performance of Blackalicious's classic rap hit Alphabet Aerobics.

"I've always had an obsession with memorizing complicated, lyrically intricate and fast songs," the British actor confessed to host Jimmy Fallon. "It's a disease."

The admission prompted Fallon to hand Radcliffe a microphone and the challenge of performing the super tricky song, which the 25-year-old actor handily accepted.

Radcliffe stunned the audience, which gave him a standing ovation, when he dropped his accent and flawlessly conquered the song's tongue twisting rhymes, which include verbal hurdles like:

Casually create catastrophes, casualties
Cancelling cats got their canopies collapsing
Detonate a dime of dank daily doin' dough
Demonstrations, Don Dada on the down low

Radcliffe is currently on the talk show circuit promoting his new movie, Horns. The supernatural thriller fantasy centres on a young man played by Radcliffe who wakes up after his girlfriend's mysterious death to find the growths on his head.

It's a dark departure for the former Harry Potter child star, who described the transition in a 2013 interview with CBC News.

"Obviously, when you're doing it from such a huge franchise there's a lot of speculation over whether you'll be able to [pull it off]," he said.

"But I can't pay too much attention to that. I've just got to carry on finding films that I love and scripts that I'm passionate about and hope for the best."

Horns opens in select theatres on Friday.

'Technology and stuff': The 'Chevy Guy' overshadows World Series MVP

'Technology and stuff' now a thing

By Jesse Campigotto, CBC Sports Posted: Oct 30, 2014 9:55 AM ET Last Updated: Oct 30, 2014 10:31 AM ET

With the World Series on the line Wednesday night in Kansas City, San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner came on in relief and tossed five shutout innings to deliver the Giants their third World Series title in five years.

He could not have been cooler under pressure.

The same can't be said for the man who presented Bumgarner with the World Series MVP trophy.

Chevrolet representative Rikk Wilde — or "Chevy Guy" as he was quickly dubbed on social media — fumbled through his lines as he tried to work through the advertorial elements ("technology and stuff?") of the sponsored trophy presentation.

MLB commissioner Bud Selig, a former car salesman himself, did not look impressed.

We feel for you, Rikk. It's a tough spot that the company didn't make any easier with that interminable script.

And, hey, your World Series probably still went better than Royals manager Ned Yost's.

Trick about 4:30 p.m. Halloween curfew no treat for police

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 29 Oktober 2014 | 22.55

A post on a satirical website stating New Brunswick will impose a 4:30 p.m. curfew on Halloween led the City of Fredericton to post a Facebook notice stating the story was fake and is resulting in a waste of police resources.

A satirical website called The Manatee indicated New Brunswick would impose a 4:30 p.m. curfew for trick-or-treaters on Halloween. (The Manatee)

The post on The Manatee suggested children "wear their costumes to school and start trick-or-treating on their walk back from the bus stop."

It stated anyone found going door-to-door after 4:30 p.m. would be fined between $100 and $500, depending on the number of children in the group and the amount of effort put into their costumes, with smaller fines issued to those with more creative costumes.

A notice from the City of Fredericton posted on Facebook stated City Hall and the city's police force had received a number of calls about the possible curfew and the false news story.

"There has been a lot of chatter on social media, but we can reassure the public that this is not the case," stated the city.

"Unfortunately, this false story led to concern from a number of residents and ended up tying up resources unnecessarily," stated the city.

"We would ask people to refrain from posting an unsubstantiated information for this reason. Specifically, increased call volume to deal with a fake story, can unnecessarily tie up police lines."

The creators of The Manatee felt the news in New Brunswick needed a bit of comic relief and started the site about one month ago.

Co-creator Alex Vietinghoff says he hopes people realize they have to watch what they read on the internet.

"I was a little nervous at first because I thought, `Oh great, what have I done?'" he said.

"But I think now it's pretty obvious to everyone that it's satirical and hopefully going forward there won't be any small crisis like that again."

The site has had about 200,000 visitors.

‘It looked real:’ Yellowknife RCMP respond to Halloween decoration

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 28 Oktober 2014 | 22.55

Police in Yellowknife were not amused this morning when they received reports of a person hanging from a balcony, only to find a Halloween decoration.

"It looked real enough that someone called the police,' says RCMP Cst. Elenore Sturko.

Instead of a person in distress, first responders found  an effigy hanging in a noose suspended from a hangman's post, a press release says.

The person who had put up the decoration said it was for a party.

It's since been taken down.

"This is a good time to remind the public to keep safety in mind this Halloween," says Sturko.

"Now that the snow and ice are here it's important to drive with caution and watch out for children who may be wearing costumes, and could be distracted by seasonal decorations."

RCMP say they'll have extra members on duty on Halloween night with a focus on traffic enforcement.

Drone being used to survey damage from alien crab species

The Nature Conservancy of Canada will be using a drone, as well as "boots on the ground," to try and get a clearer picture of the impact of the invasive green crab on eel grass beds.

European green crab have been eating their way up the coast, feeding on clams, oysters, mussels, small fish — but perhaps most alarming is their tendency to destroy ecologically vital eel grass in the process.

Eel grass serves as a nursery for many important commercial marine species, as well as for a number of species at risk. Without the eel grass, these lush estuaries become underwater deserts and that can have a huge impact on species that rely on it.

Eel grass meadows are also important for filtering and trapping sediment, improving water quality and helping sustain migratory waterfowl, according to the NCC.

The conservancy hopes the survey of more than 445 hectares of the Pugwash River Estuary will give conservationists a better idea of the amount and the health of eel grass beds in the area.

Craig Smith, program manager for the Nature Conservancy of Canada, said the project is designed to help track how eel grass is surviving against an "increasing and significant threat."

"Eel-grass meadows are one of the most productive ecosystems in the world," said Smith.

"Their slippery, grass like leaves provide numerous benefits to coastal environments and we are creating a baseline dataset of eel-grass in the estuary to help detect future changes."

Alien green crab, which likely originated in the Mediterranean, were first introduced to New Jersey in 1817. By the 1950s, green crab had found their way north to waters off southern Nova Scotia.

In recent years, they have rapidly expanded their range around Cape Breton, north to Prince Edward Island the Magdalen Islands of Quebec and into even colder waters around Newfoundland.

Despicable Me minion makes birthday appearance at Sask. farm

Written By Unknown on Senin, 27 Oktober 2014 | 22.55

Don't tell Gru, but one of his lovable, mischievous minions has made its way to a farm north of Regina.

Minions - for those who don't know - are yellow, cylinder-shaped creatures made famous in Despicable Me, a 2010 computer-animated comedy starring Steve Carell, who voices super-villian and minion-master Felonius Gru.

The minion apparently made its way to the Nixon family farm, near Earl Grey, Sask., for Arowyn's fourth birthday party.

It stands 12-feet tall, and while nobody is really sure what minions are, this one appears to be made out of two straw bales, an old tire, cardboard, a belt from a baler, air hose tubing and a great deal of spray paint.

Arowyn's mom, Jessica, said she saw a picture on the internet of a similar minion and asked her husband if one could make an appearance at their daughter's upcoming birthday party.

When the minion appeared in the yard, Jessica said her kids were pretty pumped.

"They all freaked out and ran up to it," said Jessica.

Obviously, Arowyn and her younger brother spent some time playing with their new friend.

"Running around, looking at it, jumping around, they played some tag around it," said Jessica.

The minion themed birthday party was a success, and Jessica was just finishing cleaning up the aftermath when reached by CBC.

For now, the minion will stay.

"We'll probably keep it for a little while," she said.

And, she isn't ruling out the possibility of more creatures from other dimensions visiting their farm.

"Our little guy has his party in a month," she said. "Now I'm thinking, 'what am I going to do for his party?'"

Do you have what it takes to get through 'Santa School?'

Halloween hasn't even arrived, but Kris Kringle is getting a jump-start on his Christmas plans.

Since the man in red can't be everywhere at once, some of his elves are lending a hand to whip Santa representatives into the holiday spirit this weekend in Calgary. Learning the tricks of the craft isn't easy but Calgary's "Santa School" has drawn wanna-be St. Nicks from as far away as New Mexico and from all across Canada.

"I think that the perception that the public has is you just put on a red suit and you're qualified to be Santa," said one student, who identified himself only as Santa Tomas. "There's so much to it."

The Santa and Mrs. Claus students spend three days learning the ins and outs of becoming the big man — or woman.

That includes vocal lessons, performing tips and perfecting the art of the Santa Claus entrance — right down to the ringing of the bells.

After learning the skills for success, the only thing aspiring Santas have left to practice is patience, as they wait for the Christmas season to begin.
