Barack Obama's campaign released a snarky political ad this morning sarcastically praising his opponent Mitt Romney for taking on the "criminal mastermind" of the Wall Street scandal, Sesame Street's Big Bird.

Obama has also attacked Romney's proposed cut to federal PBS funding in his recent speeches. His campaign made one of his quote into what they hoped would be a viral image on Twitter.

Big Bird has had a busy few days appearing on Saturday Night Live (and making some decidedly unpolitical jokes about birds and "tweeting") and getting praise from 2008 Republican candidate Sen. John McCain on the Today show this morning.

Today's ad had some support among Obama fans.

I love that the Obama campaign has a sense of humour. Obama for America TV ad: Big Bird http://youtu.be/bZxs09eV-VcKeris Stainton

Reporters covering the election weren't impressed with the "Big Bird" ad and started asking the campaign some pointed questions about it. .

The Obama Big Bird ad looks like the work of a campaign in panic mode. It's crunch time, when voters get very serious, very smart. So, this?Terry Moran

Via @maggiepolitico -- Obama camp is out this morning with a goofy video of the Big Bird variety: http://politi.co/PSsWSZPOLITICO

Politco later reported: "An Obama spokesman claims this is going on national cable and broadcast, during 'comedy shows.'  The spot was intended as parody. But ahead of the next debate, Obama's message so far has been a defensive posture, taking on items he clearly wished he had rebutted on the debate stage."

By mid-morning, Sesame Workshop (creators of Sesame Street and formerly known as the Children's Television Workshop) put out a response to the ad:

Here's our response to recent campaign ads: http://bit.ly/QQQDyVSesame Workshop

The statement read: "Sesame Workshop is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization and we do not endorse candidates or participate in political campaigns. We have approved no campaign ads, and as is our general practice, have requested that the ad be taken down."

The ad seems to have backfired on the Obama campaign, giving Republicans fodder for their claim that the Democrats' campaign since the debate has been has lacked seriousness.
