On the night of what many are calling the world's first truly "digital election," more than 20 million tweets about the presidential candidates and their campaigns.

As Twitter revealed at 10:16 p.m. ET Tuesday night, this makes it the most tweeted political event in U.S. history.

With 20 million tweets, Election Day just became the most tweeted about event in US political history. #election2012Twitter Government

Here are five things that helped the social network hit a new peak in terms of traffic and buzz on election day in the U.S.

1. Barack Obama's Tweets

Within minutes of Tweeting this image with the words "Four more years," Barack Obama surpassed Justin Bieber as holder of the most re-tweeted message of all time.

Another Tweet from the @BarackObama handle is on its way to becoming the second most-tweeted message of all time.

The Tweet above has racked up more than 214,000 retweets in just four hours, whereas it took Justin Bieber's "RIP Avalanna" tweet below several days to reach its peak. It currently stands at approximately 223,000 retweets.

RIP Avalanna. i love youJustin Bieber

The president's social media prowess has been well-documented throughout the course of his campaign, and he further boosted his digital cred with a last-minute Reddit plea, the first since his famed AMA session in late August.

3. Nate Silver

Nate Silver is an American statistician and former professional poker player, known for devising a statistical system to forecast the performance and career development of Major League Baseball players.

He runs the incredibly popular election statistics blog Fivethirtyeight for the New York Times and his predictions for the outcome of 2012's presidential race have been mocked and eyed suspiciously as a "tool of a vast left-wing media conspiracy," according to Lane Filler at Newsday.

As results started coming in Tuesday night exactly like Silver predicted, Twitter users grew increasingly excited.

.@fivethirtyeight is now 49-for-49 on presidential state calls, 29-for-29 on Senate seats. Florida a tossup, four Senate seats left.Bill Barnwell

A tongue-in-cheek website set up yesterday to gauge whether or not Silver is, in fact, a witch switched its stance from "No" to "Maybe" when Obama's victory was announced.

Is Nate Silver a Witch? His unusually accurate predictions are, thus far, explained by his use of validated statistical methods. His disregard of momentum, gut f...

3. The #iVoted Hashtag

Many voters took to Instagram and Twitter to show off their badges of civic honour today. So many, in fact, that #iVoted was trending in the U.S. on Twitter for most of the day.

4. Beyonce joined Instagram

One of Obama's most prominent and influential celebrity supporters, Beyonce decided to join Instagram Tuesday night just hours before the polls were closed. Her very first post was in support of the president's reelection campaign:

My Bff finally got a IG page yaaaay #beauty #beyonce #cantsleepTina Mac

Later in the evening, after it was announced that Barack Obama had won the election, @BaddieBey posted this:

#beyonce #obamaedmarr

Entertainment, fashion, celebrity and news blogs exploded with the news that Queen B herself had finally joined the popular social network.

Twitter users were similarly enthused, enough to give Obama a major boost in social media traffic in the final hours of Americans casting their votes.

5. "Stay in Line"

Frustration is mounting at polls at MS51 #parkslope. 4 hr line moving at a trickle. We need more volunteers #Vote2012 http://pic.twitter.com/I1RBF1dLKarina Mangu-Ward

In an effort to bolster spirits and encourage voters to stick it out, Barack Obama's campaign accounts and celebrities in support of the president began encouraging people to #StayInLine on Twitter.

If you're in line when the polls close, stay in line to vote. It could help make the difference. http://pic.twitter.com/0QFN2ag1Barack Obama

If you're standing in a voting line STAY in line. If you have friends in line bring them food & tell them to stay in line. #VoteObamamia farrow

Don't forget: If you are in line when the polls close, *YOU CAN STILL VOTE*. STAY IN LINE. Call 1-866-OUR-VOTE if you have problems.Wil Wheaton

Waiting to vote? Stay in line! As long as you're in line before the polls close, you can still vote.Jessica Alba

The uniformity of the Tweets suggest that this was part of an orchestrated effort by Obama's social media team, and a successful one at that. #StayInLine was also trending on Twitter for much of the evening.
