Edmonton romantics to deliver 1,000 love letters, to strangers

Valentine's Day is just days away, and starting Tuesday some lucky Edmontonians may receive a special gift: an anonymous love note, placed under a windshield wiper, tucked under a bicycle seat, or handed out directly on the LRT by a romantic well-wisher.

The secret Valentine's cards are part of the Love Letters 2 Strangers project by local photographer Ashley Green.

Green said she started Love Letters 2 Strangers as a way to include those who might otherwise feel left out on the year's supposedly most romantic day.

"Maybe you don't have a significant other, or maybe you're a little bit bitter about Valentine's Day," Greene said.

"This is a great way to get involved where you can just show love to the person bagging your groceries or sitting beside you on the bus."

On Saturday, Green held a workshop with around 60 letter-writers at the Woodcroft Library, with the goal of crafting over 1,000 love letters.

The volunteers broke out the glitter, markers, and pastel envelopes and together crafted a total of 1,034 one-of-a-kind love letters, Greene said Sunday through Twitter.

But more volunteers are needed, for the really fun part. Between Feb. 12 and Feb. 14, the love letters will be placed, tucked, hidden, and handed out around Edmonton.

On Tuesday, volunteers will meet at 4:30 pm MT at the Southgate Mall Starbucks for a letter-delivery mission on the LRT.

On Wednesday, starting at 4:30 p.m. MT, the letters will be distributed around the West Edmonton Mall.

And Thursday — the big day — love-letter postal delivery will begin at 6:30 a.m. MT at the Tim Horton's in the 10600 block of Jasper Avenue in downtown Edmonton.

Green says that, next year, she'd like to expand the project to Calgary and Drumheller.

She said she's also heard from people in British Columbia and parts of the U.S. who are interested in organizing letter-writing bees and delivery missions.
