Cancelled exams. Empty offices. Quiet commutes.

The potentially record-breaking snowstorm churning through much of southern Ontario and the U.S. has kept many North Americans indoors as reports of closures and worsening conditions continue to swirl.

Although those missing flights may be miffed, plenty of people have taken to social media to celebrate the snow day.

There was much enthusiasm and support for an impromptu long weekend courtesy of the 'weather gods.'

By the beard of Zeus if we don't have a snow day tomorrow I will cry a river all over Sylvania and make sure it freezes over before 7:35 a.mrachllll

And the weather gods warned of the descending storm, so the people flocked to Ye Ole Foods for artisan water, dips, and fine cheese.Christopher Monks

Several fans of the blustery weather took credit for the storm, making reference to a handful of popular rituals believed to summon a snow day.

Some spent the night before the forecasted storm in their favourite pajamas -- worn inside out and/or backwards. Others put spoons under their pillows. And some swore that the ice cubes they flushed down the toilet made all the difference.

Many had their superstitions confirmed overnight.

One school administrator's website -- the principal's page by Michael Smith in Tuscola, Illinois -- details the ways that students hoping for a snow day should go about summoning one.

"The Snow Day, always capitalized out of respect, is a complicated creature," he begins, adding that everyone loves them -- except maybe parents.

"Keep in mind these steps must be completed in order. And most importantly, they must be finished before your normal bedtime," he advises, warning the kids not to stay up late lest they offend the Snow Day Gods.

Step 1 - Put your pajamas on inside out (bonus points if your pajamas have feet).

Step 2 - Brush you teeth with the opposite hand (harder than it sounds).

Step 3 - Flush a minimum of 6 ice cubes down the toilet (cubes... not crushed ice... another common mistake).

Step 4 - Sleep with a spoon under your pillow (don't ask me why, just do it).

Although many variations of these rituals are circulating online, it seems many are less concerned with the recipe and more focused on the results.
