The classic Nintendo game Mario Kart is being credited in part, for helping a young boy learn to control his grandmother's vehicle in an emergency. (Nintendo / The Associated Press)A 10-year-old Colorado boy is being hailed as a hero this week for simultaneously rescuing his great-grandmother in a speeding vehicle, and proving on behalf of gamers everywhere that video games really can save lives.Gryffin Sanders of Golden, Colo., was riding in a car with his 4-year-old brother last month when his great grandma, 74-year-old Darlene Nestor, passed out behind the wheel.
"My first thought was actually, 'is this a test or what?'" said the youngster to NBC affiliate KUSA-TV. "She just passed out in the middle of a sentence. I tried to wake her up at first."
When Gryffin realized that the car was veering into oncoming traffic, he hopped out of the passenger seat and into action.
The vehicle slowed to a stop in a mud-filled ditch, leaving Sanders and his younger brother unharmed.

(KUSA-TV) A passerby stopped to call 911, and Nestor was eventually airlifted to a hospital, where she is recovering."My mom actually told me after, 'I'm so glad that you turned into the ditch and didn't freak out like I would have," Gryffin said. "I guess I just had the instincts not to."

Gryffin credited the popular Nintendo game for teaching him how to handle a wheel. "I'm pretty good at go kart driving," he laughed.
