A controversial green art installation on Paris' tony Place Vendome has been taken down after being vandalized overnight.
Le Monde reported that American artist Paul McCarthy was hit in the face Thursday by a man who said the sculpture, which had just been inflated on the Place Vendôme, had no place there. (Jacques Brinon/The Associated Press)
The inflatable sculpture called "Tree" vaguely resembled a Christmas tree but evoked for others, including its creator, American artist Paul McCarthy, a giant anal sex toy.
McCarthy told Le Monde the work was somewhat inspired by an anal plug — but insisted it was a bit of a "joke" and meant as an "abstraction."
Wires holding the sculpture in place were severed by vandals sometime overnight, according to French media reports. The sculpture was deflated and folded up on Saturday.
Culture Minister Fleur Pellerin blasted the vandalism, calling it "a serious attack on the principle of artistic freedom."
Locals were quoted as saying the artwork was ugly and had no place in one of the most beautiful squares in the French capital.
Many took to Twitter to complain, using the hashtag #PlugGate. And on Thursday, the artist himself was reportedly slapped by an offended man in the historic square shortly after the "Tree" was inflated. Le Monde said McCarthy was not injured.
The temporary, 25-metre exhibit was created for the International Contemporary Art Fair, which takes place in Paris from Oct. 23 to 26.
