A Canadian man won a U.K. town's famed annual shin-kicking competition on Monday, dethroning the English defending champion.

Vancouver's Ross Langill, sporting a Vancouver Canucks jersey, outlasted his opponent as they kicked each other in the shins in an attempt to knock the other down.

Competitors are allowed to stuff their pants with hay to protect their legs.

"That was hard," Langill said. "The hay really protects the shins, but it's really the feet that takes all the brunt."

Event organizers say shin kicking dates back 400 years.
