Sasquatch videos create buzz for B.C. app maker

Written By Unknown on Rabu, 31 Juli 2013 | 22.56

Two videos of apparent sasquatch encounters near Mission, B.C., are capturing media attention, but they might just have more to do with the marketing plans of a B.C. software company than real sightings of the legendary creatures.

PlayMobility claims the Bigfoot videos were submitted anonymously after the company issued a call-out for footage of legendary creatures. The company then posted them to YouTube and featured the videos on the website for its Legend Tracker app

In one video, the zoomed-in camera lens focuses on a dark, hairy-looking figure off in the distance by a lake.

The app-maker claims the video was submitted by a couple who were hiking on a logging road above Mission, B.C.

"When taking photos of the scenic views, they spotted something moving. Even though they were a fair distance away they were still able to zoom in enough to see something standing upright. Bear? Man? Something else?" the description says.

In the second video, a group of tourists stand on what appears to be a logging road, snapping photos and shooting video at a figure close by in the woods. One the tourists ostensibly submitted the video to Legend Tracker.

"This tourist was visiting Mission, B.C, Canada. Someone in the group witnessed something large moving in the woods. Those that didn't run away stayed to get a better look, many photos and videos were taken before the large hairy biped ran towards the group then away," the post on the Legend Tracker site said.

The realistic-looking videos have begun to make the rounds in social and mainstream media, sparking discussion.

While some viewers have been asking for more information about the locations where the videos were shot in order to look for evidence of the sasquatch, others are denouncing the videos as obvious hoaxes.

PlayMobility bills the Legend Tracker app as a location-based treasure hunt that rewards successful seekers of legendary beasts with augmented reality prizes.

For example, a player in Kelowna can track Ogopogo to the right spot on Okanagan Lake, and then gets to use the "sonar" feature to detect the lake monster as it swims.

The Legend Tracker app also has an augmented reality prize that shows a sasquatch walking through the forest as the user points his or her phone at the right location in the woods.

Single-serving tumblrs are like fortune cookies; sometimes they're silly, sometimes they'restrange and sometimes they make no sense at all. More often than not, they'regood for little more than a quick chuckle, but every once in a while, a Tumblogpops up that prompts us to ask some questions.

'Cop Selfies' is one of those blogs.

Like many a viral sensation before it, the blog's URL is being shared among friends like wildfire this week. Many are unsure as to why. but it's clear that self-taken photos of police officers in uniform (the more duckface the better) are captivating the web.

The notion of the selfie (also known as GPOY -- gratuitous picture of yourself) has been a topic of much discussion and debate in recent years as smartphones have become more accessible and the act of stopping to create a self-portrait loses some of the taboo it once held.
And yet, selfies are still seen by many as narcissistic and vain -- a sign of our culture's obsession with technology, celebrities, and the self.

Writer Brian Droitcour is one of many who have refuted the notion that selfies convey arrogance, writing that "narcissism is a pathological obsession with the self that inhibits the recognition of others... The real narcissists are the ones who never take selfies. They imagine their self as autonomous, hermetic--too precious to be shared."

Two of four iconic mini-documentaries on Canada's wildlife once feared lost have been recovered from the CBC Archives — the loon and the beaver.

The Canadian Wildlife Service created the "Hinterland Who's Who" series, which had its television premiere 50 years ago.

The distinctive soundtrack of the Flute Poem opens each black-and-white vignette, followed by the narration by professor and author John Livingston to educate Canadians about the country's diverse wildlife.

The National Film Board produced the public service announcements, but neither organization had copies of the original set.

By chance, the footage had been saved by a former CBC employee, who donated the film cans to the archives.

That made it easy for CBC archivist Colin Preston to dig them up when the CBC was asked to search for them.

"I just had to trot downstairs, pull the can out, look on the screen and there was the loon," said Preston, who subsequently unearthed the beaver footage from the archives..

The search continues for the moose and gannet, along with the original French-language set.

Skunk saved from Toronto traffic as 'Iced Capp' removed

A Toronto skunk was found wandering in traffic with a Tim Hortons Iced Capp cup early Tuesday.

Tony Smyth, CBC Toronto's overnight videographer, was on Don Mills Road at Highway 401 when he spotted the skunk wandering in and out of traffic with the empty 'Iced Capp' container on its head.

"He was trying to get it off with his little paws and bumping off the curbs," Smyth said. "Obviously, he couldn't see a thing."

A City TV cameraman, Bert Dandy, walked up to the skunk and pulled the cup off. The animal ran into the bush.

"You see the strangest things on night shift," Smyth said.

Hamilton couple invents self-teaching dictionary

Written By Unknown on Senin, 29 Juli 2013 | 22.56

Justin and Annmarie Page sit at the kitchen table of their east Hamilton redbrick, beaming over freshly printed copies of their new book.

The couple's first title isn't a memoir or a work a fiction. Rather, it's a dictionary — coil-bound with a black, red and white cover — specifically designed for people who are learning how to read.

"This is the people's book," says Justin, excitement booming in his voice. "We call it the 'U-Can' because with it, you can to teach yourself to read."

He's confident of this because he's used the tool himself. Justin (born Tracy LeQuyere) describes himself as a "functional illiterate" who plodded his way through school and couldn't read until age 33.

Now 62, he says the process of putting the book together has expanded the number of words he can reliably read almost five-fold, from 1,300 to over 6,000.

'Sensible' design

With around 7,000 words, the U-Can Dictionary has much fewer entries than the your average Oxford or Merriam-Webster tome. Annmarie, who essentially wrote the book, listed each word with its simplest, most commonly used definition.

But what distinguishes the Pages' dictionary even more is how it's laid out. Like in any dictionary, its entries are organized by letter. In the U-Can, however, they are divided down even further. Under each letter, the one and two-letter words come first, allowing readers to pick up foundational words and syllables before moving on to more challenging fare.

The Pages designed the dictionary to be as user-friendly as possible. The Pages designed the dictionary to be as user-friendly as possible. (Cory Ruf/CBC)

"You have to learn those 500 words before you go any further — because that's logical, sensible, meaningful, understandable and no one's disagreed," says Justin.

The book, he says, has other features that make using it even handier. The alphabet is listed at the bottom of each page, functioning as a sort of legend to help readers flip between passages more easily. All of the words used in the meanings, he adds, are defined elsewhere in the dictionary.

"We just empowered the functional illiterate to go after the words that he knows. Now that I know where they are, I just have to know how to spell them. I just have to learn them. And that's the whole magic of this book."

Ongoing campaign

The U-Can Dictionary is the next chapter in Justin's three-decade-long crusade to reduce illiteracy in Canada. In the mid-1980s, he, along with fellow ex-con Rick Parsons, founded Beat the Street, a program designed to help people who fell through the proverbial cracks in the education system to teach each other how to read.

"I started the literacy program because I'm smart. I knew that dirty little, stinkin' bikers and bag ladies and those people will help each other," he says, purposely invoking the slang of the day. "So we would get a scumbag who knows how to read to teach a bag lady who doesn't know how to read. And it worked."

Beat the Street worked so well that it was replicated across Canada, attracting millions of dollars government funding and charitable donations. In addition, the duo's efforts won them the Order of Canada in 1989.

The honour didn't diminish Justin's fire for the cause. He rhymes off statistics about how many Canadians can't read well and speaks emotionally on what effect poor literacy has not only on one's job prospects, but also one's self-esteem.

"When some kids, they don't get it, they cry," he says. "It's full of shame. It's full of embarrassment. You hand me joke? All of my life, people go, 'Hey, want to read a joke?' I was the joke, because I couldn't read it."

Team effort

Justin decided to ask his wife, with whom he's raising two boys, Jack, 6, and Michael, 17, to help him make his dream of a self-teaching dictionary a reality.

"Originally, I wanted no part of this," says Annmarie, an avid reader who, as a child, consulted her Charlie Brown dictionary for fun. "I said to him, 'What the hell are you doing? Writing a dictionary?'"

'We were like druggies, knocking on our friends' doors, asking 'Hey, do you have the words?' —Justin Page

But eventually Annmarie, 43, got onboard with the project. "It's Justin's passion," she says, "and I needed to get it out for him."

Together, the couple enlisted friends to pore over thousands of words to determine which ones would make the cut. "We were like druggies, knocking on our friends' doors, asking 'Hey, do you have the words?' Justin laughs. "And then we'd go count them in the car."

The process of whittling down the definitions, Annmarie says, was onerous as well.

"I had this all done with the meanings and he says to me, 'Can you make them shorter?' And I said, "Are you serious?'"

"I drove her crazy," Justin chimes in. "That's what she's trying to say."

'Powerful' book

Three years on, the Pages have finished copies of the book in hand. They elected to have the book published by Inclusion Press, a Toronto imprint that Marsha Forest, the late activist and educator who inspired Justin to learn how to read, co-founded.

"It's still a little unreal," says Annmarie. "We waited so long to get it and now that we have it, it's beautiful. I carry it around everywhere and I show everybody."

They have also entered into an agreement with Wal-Mart to have the retail giant stock 10,000 copies on its shelves. Justin hopes the exposure will get the book into the hands of as many new readers — both young and old — as possible.

"Knowledge is words and words are power," Justin says. "This is the most powerful book in the world because if you can master this, you've got everything."

The U-Can Dictionary ($20, plus shipping and handling) is available on Inclusion Press's website. People in Hamilton who wish to have the book delivered for free can order it by calling the Pages at 905-538-9133.

Tattoo artist surpasses world record

An Edmonton tattoo artist says she has surpassed the world record for inking the most tattoos within a 24-hour period

Dianne Lopez wanted to break the Guinness World Record of 801 as well as raise funds for the Edmonton Humane Society. She started her attempt at Duke's Bar and Grill in north Edmonton at noon on Saturday and finished at noon today.

Lopez was able to complete between 811 and 815 tattoos, short of the 1,000 she set as her goal, but enough to break the world record.

Dianne Lopez says she surpassed the world record of 801 tattoos in a 24-hour period. Dianne Lopez says she surpassed the world record of 801 tattoos in a 24-hour period. (CBC)

"Really exhausted but excited at the same time," she said.

"That was the whole point, just to challenge myself, see if I'm able to do it and we raised a lot of money for the humane society, so that's the best part."

For a minimum donation of $20, Lopez gave each person a tattoo of a dog paw mark or an infinity symbol.

In order to qualify for the world record, she had to ink tattoos of a certain size with a bit of shading.

The buildings of Mos Espa on the planet Tatooine were left behind in Tunisia after the film was shot in 1997. Since then, the film set has been a popular tourist destination.

However, tourists who want to visit should go soon, as the edge of the dune has reached the first of the iconic, Bedouin-style buildings.

Ralph Lorenz, an astrophysicist at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, has been studying the dune's progress, and recently wrote a report about it. He spoke to As It Happens about why a scientist would care, and whether he's rooting for Mos Espa or the sand dune.

Windsor woman aims for jigsaw puzzle world record

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 26 Juli 2013 | 22.56

A Windsor, Ont., woman is pursuing the Guinness World Record for most jigsaw puzzles completed and she's asking for the public's help.

Jodie Desbiens turned to puzzles when she quit drinking five years ago.

"I just decided to quit. I wasn't really an alcoholic. I liked to drink and party and I was young," she said. "It just wasn't so fun anymore and I started the puzzles.

"It's a hobby. It's calming and relaxing."

Her first was a tiger. She's since completed and glued together approximately 200 more.

Jodie Desbiens has finished more than 200 puzzles and is shooting for more than 1,000.Jodie Desbiens has finished more than 200 puzzles and is shooting for more than 1,000. (Jodie Desbiens/Facebook)

The biggest puzzle she's finished had 18,000 pieces and measures three metres wide and two metres high. The rain forest scene that took six months to finish hangs on her wall.

Desbiens can now finish a 1,000-piece puzzle in as little as a day or two.

"It all depends on the picture," she said.

In September of last year, she had finished 150 and wondered about a world record. Bored, she checked the Guinness World Record website and, sure enough, there is.

At that time, it was 238.

"I [wanted] to apply at 325," Desbiens said.

But even that number has since been shattered by Gina Gil Lacuna, of the Philippines. She's put together 1,028 puzzles.

"Oh, I don't care, I'm going for it," Desbiens said. "I'm young enough. I've got time."

Desbiens said she was aware of Lacuna's "puzzled mansion" and that Lucana was considering applying for the record. But Desbiens said she had heard rumours Lucana only had 300 puzzles.

"That's why I was going to apply at 325," she said.

This week, Desbiens logged onto the web again and posted a free classified on Kijiji asking people to donate puzzles in an effort to help her set a record.

Desbiens did say she's willing to pay a dollar or two for the used puzzles.

"I just thought, maybe more people would help and have them lying around and not using them," Desbiens said. "I go to a lot of yard sales and second hand stores."

Missing pieces from second hand puzzles present a bit of a problem. But that's not the worst.

"Some of the puzzles aren't the ones in the box," she said. "I thought I was doing a Winnie the Pooh puzzle for my grandson and it ended up being four women in dresses."

But as McGregor reports, the mystery man's act of kindess made a lot of people's day.

International competitors plow into Olds for world championship

Written By Unknown on Senin, 22 Juli 2013 | 22.56

Competitors from 30 countries are in Olds this weekend for the 60th Annual World Plowing Championship.

The two-day event takes place at Olds College and is hosting a diverse range of teams. Competitors come from all over the world to try their hand at weed control and plowing straight lines.

This year's contestants hail from Austria, Kosovo and Lithuania to Kenya, Macedonia, Russia and Northern Ireland – to name a few.

While plowing would normally be considered hard work, this year's participants are finding the task even more challenging than usual because of wet soil.

"It's very dark and it seems to stick to the plow boards, which is difficult," said Anna May McHugh, a board member with the World Plowing Organization. "You've had a lot of rain and I believe that possibly that contributed to the soil being that much more moist."

While there's no money on the line, for many it is about claiming ploughing glory. For others, it's more about learning how to help their communities back home.

Improving food security

"One of the major things that we are looking at in this competition is plowing and the main reason is to check on food insecurity," said Batram Muthoka, a Kenyan competitor. "We are trying as a country, we are trying as a people to become food secure."

Some of Kenya's major crops include corn and wheat, and those fields need to be plowed well for optimal food production.

The team members work together with people from neighbouring countries to learn best practices and share the knowledge they learn.

By focusing on hard training combined with a give-back attitude, teammates are able to share what they've learned and help their communities.

"We get trained people to become trainers back in the country, and that has seen the growth, improvement and production of most of the crops in our country," he said. "Therefore, Kenya is becoming food secure out of these practices."

5 women aim to swim Lake Ontario end to end

Five women will attempt to swim across Lake Ontario lengthwise starting Tuesday morning, in a gruelling 305 kilometre relay they expect will take five straight days of non-stop swimming.

The swim will begin at 10 a.m. in Kingston and is expected to end in Burlington.

The women — who range in age from 18 to 61 — will swim in two-hour shifts through the day and night, sleeping and eating on an entourage of sailboats and zodiacs.

They hope to raise $300,000 for Plan International's 'Because I am a girl' campaign.

All of the women are accomplished long-distance solo swimmers. Colleen Shields, 61, Nicole Mallette, 48, Samantha Whiteside, 23 and Rebekah Boscariol, 18, have successfully completed the Lake Ontario crossing.

Eighteen-year-old Mona Sharari, the youngest member of the group, swam across the English Channel last year.

The length-wise crossing has never been completed, but the solo crossing from Niagara-on-the-Lake to Toronto has been completed 57 times, the majority of them by women.

The crossing was first completed by Marilyn Bell in 1954, when she was 16-years-old.

72-year-old N.L. 'superman' lifts SUV off son-in-law

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 21 Juli 2013 | 22.55

A man in Salvage, N.L., is being called a 'miracle man' by some residents in the community for lifting a vehicle off his son-in-law, but he says he's no hero.

Cecil Stuckless, 72, said his son-in-law Frank Vatcher was in the garage replacing the brakes on his SUV when he asked Stuckless to go to the shed and get him a clamp.

While Stuckless was out getting the tool, he heard Vatcher cry out for help.

"He bawled out, he said, 'Cec, help me,' and when I turned around, the Jeep was on top of him," Stuckless said.

Without a second thought, Stuckless bounded into the garage and managed to lift the vehicle off the man, just enough for him to wiggle out from underneath.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he got 38 stitches in his head.

"If I wasn't there — if nobody was there — I'd say he wouldn't have done it, wouldn't have gotten out himself. I'd say he wouldn't make it," Stuckless said.

But he maintains that he's no hero, despite what some people in his community are saying.

"One feller come on yesterday and spoke to me about it and he said, 'What are you, Superman?'" Stuckless said.

"I said, 'B'ys, no, I'm not super, I just did what I could do — that's all that's to it.'"

Stuckless said he's never lifted anything that heavy before, but guesses he had a little divine intervention to help him save his son-in-law.

Happy ending for girl, 3, after playhouse smashed by wind

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 19 Juli 2013 | 22.55

A little girl who said she was "mad" after her playhouse was blown to pieces in a storm now has something to smile about.

A retailer has promised a new playhouse for Isabelle Webster, 3.

Isabelle and her family were away from their home near Regina when wicked weather struck on Monday. Around the province, there was heavy rain, hail and several tornadoes.

The family returned to find everything intact in its yard, except for Isabelle's playhouse, which had been picked up by the wind and smashed on the ground.

A photo of Isabelle looking distinctly unimpressed with mother nature immediately became popular on social media.

Isabelle's dad Neil told her that he would try to rebuild the playhouse as best he could.

But it turns out, he doesn't have to. Just yesterday, Canadian Tire told the family it will donate a brand new playhouse to Isabelle.

This picture, taken by Isabelle's mother Elizabeth, showed the three-year-old glumly surveying the wreckage of her beloved playhouse immediately after the storm. Hamilton man crafts homemade guitars, but can't play them

Paul Bottos is part of cigar box guitar revival

Paul Bottos is a little bit like a Dr. Frankenstein who doesn't know what to do with his own monster.

The 49-year-old from Hamilton makes cigar box guitars — handmade, homemade instruments concocted from spare parts of all kinds.

But he doesn't know how to play.

Paul Bottos has been making cigar box guitars for three years.Paul Bottos has been making cigar box guitars for three years. (Adam Carter/CBC)

"I've always been surrounded by musicians," Bottos said. "My gift is to make them. It excites me to see artists do unique things with it."

But he's never felt the urge to learn to play himself. In fact, the first time he hears one of his own guitars is the first time another musician plugs it in. He's picked up three or four chords over the years, "but I've never played a whole song all the way through."

The hobby started innocuously enough three years ago. A friend sent him some shots of a cigar box guitar online and he immediately thought, "I think I can do that."

Cigar boxes, tin cans and shower drains

He took apart one of his son's guitars and made a crude first model — but it was pretty raw, he says. The intonation and string tension was all wrong, and it was virtually unplayable.

But he didn't get discouraged, and kept going. He's made about 25 guitars by now, all to varying degrees of success. Some are made from cigar boxes, others from knife boxes. One even has a shower drain and a tin can in it.

"The neck broke off that one once," he said.

They're never planned. The pickups, necks and electronics are whatever he can find, coupled with parts from yard sales and Canadian Tire. The whole thing is an escape — Bottos works in a maximum security psychiatric facility for young offenders, which can be draining some days, he says.

"This is just so far removed from what I do," he said. "It's therapeutic."

Though his guitars have been for sale, it's not really a business. He makes them because he loves them, and if someone buys it, then great. (Some of his creations are on sale at Humble Pie on James Street North.) The guitars sell for about $200 and up.

"I just don't want to be forced to make something because I have to, or make something twice. This is just fun for me."

A musical revival

Cigar box guitars have been around since the late 1800s. They were used in blues and jug bands, as makeshift versions of "real" instruments played by people who just couldn't afford them.

The internet has fostered a "modern revival" of cigar box guitar building, as websites like Cigarboxnation.com let hobbyists and musicians share ideas and plans for building and playing them.

Tom Wilson from Blackie and the Rodeo Kings playing one of Bottos' creations.Tom Wilson from Blackie and the Rodeo Kings playing one of Bottos' creations. (Paul Bottos/Cigarboxnation.com)

There's also the yearly Cigar Box Guitar Extravaganza in Huntsville, Ala., celebrating the instrument. But it's not just a hobby. Big names like Tom Waits, Paul McCartney and Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top have played cigar box instruments.

Bottos is the kind of guy that sees rock music with a kind of hushed awe. Bands like Led Zeppelin and Rush are huge in his world. "Page and Lifeson are heroes to me," he said.

That's why it was a big deal when Tom Wilson of Blackie and the Rodeo Kings and Junkhouse fame invited him into his home to see some of his work.

"I walk in with six guitars and he's got Junos everywhere and I'm just in awe," Bottos said.

Some see Bottos' work as purely artistic. And while it's true that it's a visual-first medium for him, that couldn't be farther from the truth, he says.

"This isn't art," he said. "I want people to pull these off the walls and play them. They need to be touched and banged around and played."

"I'm not a luthier, nor would I ever confess to be one," he said.

"This is just fun for me."

T. Rex tooth found lodged in escaped prey

The fearsome bite of a hungry Tyrannosaurus rex left behind new evidence that the famous beast hunted for food and wasn't just a scavenger.

Researchers found a part of a T. rex tooth wedged between two tailbones of a duckbill dinosaur unearthed in northwestern South Dakota. The tooth was partially enclosed by regrown bone, indicating the smaller duckbill had escaped from the T. rex and lived for months or years afterward.

Since the duckbill was alive and not just a carcass when it met the T. rex, the fossil provides definitive evidence that T. rex hunted live animals, researchers say in Monday's issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The fossil, from around 67 million years ago, indicates the T. rex bit the duckbill from behind and "intended to take it for a meal," said David Burnham of the University of Kansas, an author of the report.

It's not clear whether there was a chase involved, he said.

The latest find is consistent with other evidence that T. rex hunted in addition to scavenging carcasses, scientists say. The latest find is consistent with other evidence that T. rex hunted in addition to scavenging carcasses, scientists say. (David Monniaux/Wikimedia Commons)

Experts who didn't participate in the study said there was already ample evidence that T. rex went after live animals as well as scavenging carcasses. It brought a bone-shattering bite and teeth up to a foot long to each task.

The new fossil is the first to include a T. rex tooth embedded in the bones of its prey, giving "extremely strong physical evidence that the attacker was a tyrannosaur," said Thomas Holtz, Jr., of the University of Maryland.

"It's one other bit of evidence (for hunting) fully consistent with the other data already established from lots and lots of lines of evidence," Holtz said.

You might think a T. rex would take down anything in sight, but Jack Horner of Montana State University said it apparently preyed on the weak, the sick and the young instead.

It makes sense that T. rex also scavenged, said Kenneth Carpenter, curator of paleontology at the Utah State University East Prehistoric Museum.

"If there's a free meal, why not?" he asked. But decay can make carcasses toxic after a while, he said, and "at that point, T. rex is going to have no choice but to hunt."

The tail bones where the T. rex tooth was found belonged to an adult hadrosaur, most likely Edmontosaurus, the kind displayed at Houston Museum of Natural Science. Ten-year-old Oisín Millea is touring the province of Quebec this summer, retracing the path of a handwritten message he found in a bottle that washed up on the shore near his home at Passage East, Ireland.

Oisín brought the bottle back to Quebec, and the girls who put the bottle in the ocean met him at the airport in Montreal.

Oisín found the bottle last October, but it was tossed into the ocean by two girls from Montreal more than eight years before.

In June 2004, friends Claudia Garneau and Charlaine Dalpé, then 12 years old, wrote the note, put it into a green plastic pop bottle and cast it into the sea while on vacation at Grande-Vallée, in Quebec's Gaspé region.

"I thought it was just rubbish. So I picked it up, looked in the bottle and then I opened it," Oisin told CBC Montreal about the moment when he made the discovery. "I tried to read it and I thought it was in Spanish, and then I found out it was in French."

The Millea family and the girls from Quebec met over Skype last October, after they learned about each other through reports in the media. At the time, they vowed to meet in person during the summer.

Employees from Tourism Quebec saw a golden promotional opportunity when they heard about the story and decided to organize a tour of Quebec for Oisín and his family. They even sent him special luggage from Quebec for his trip.

6 generations of same family living in Ontario

Priscilla Steiner has been telling people the same story for her entire life, which got even more amazing after she gave birth on the weekend in Mississauga, Ont.

Her day-old son, Ethan John Curtis, became the newest member of a very large family, which currently has six generations living on the planet at the same time.

"I don't even know how to describe it," Steiner told CBC News, when once again telling the story that some have found hard to believe over the years.

People have often presumed that Steiner's mother is her sister and that her grandmother is the one who raised her. But they are wrong.

"They never believe it," said Steiner, 19, who has often had to spell out the story by counting out the generations on her fingers, in order for people to understand.

It's a rare scenario to have six generations of the same family inhabiting the Earth at the same time.

"If you have someone who has six living generations, they must have had their children at a very young age and it's just a really unusual thing," said Lorine McGinnis Schulze, a genealogist who told CBC News she has not come across another six-generation family during her career.

The youngest of 4 generations of grandmothers

Stephanie Steiner is the mother of Priscilla and the newly minted grandmother of Ethan.

Just 34 years old herself, Stephanie Steiner knows what it is like to be a very young mom, just like her own mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who all had the chance to meet Ethan after he was born.

"Obviously, we had babies very young and I don't recommend young people going out and getting pregnant," she said.

"However at the same time, we are so lucky that we have such a support and such a foundation of love," in the family that has grown so large over the decades.

Amazingly, Ethan's great-grandmother, Brenda Steiner, is just 51 years old.

His great-great-grandmother, Marilyn Cross, is 68, while his great-great-great-grandmother, Doreen Byers, is 86 years young.

Priscilla Steiner also said that coming from such a big family has had its advantages and expects more of the same for her son.

"It's pretty good, there's a lot of support, love," she said. "It's good for the baby to have a big, nice family."

Death Valley National Park officials may be regretting showing people that their California park lands get hot enough to fry an egg on the pavement.

Last month, one of the park's employees posted a video of her using Death Valley's extreme heat to fry an egg on a frying pan.

She left a covered frying pan outside in the desert heat, then cracked an egg into the pan and after about six minutes, the experiment worked.

"So this proves you can fry an egg in the desert sun," says the unidentified park employee.

Temperatures in Death Valley, which is a basin that sits below sea level, are known for being extreme. Currently, Death Valley has an extreme summer heat alert in place, warning visitors to expect high temperatures of about 37 C to almost 48 C.

The video neither encouraged nor dissuaded park goers from trying the science experiment. The woman simply offered some advice for those wanting to try to fry an egg in Death Valley.

"If you're going to try [frying an egg] in Death Valley, I highly recommend using a skillet because if you put it on the ground, it just makes a mess," says the park employee.

Naturally, people started experimenting.

People are taking the phrase "it's so hot outside you could fry an egg" seriously in California lolMiss Frizzle

But, park officials quickly tired of the small-scale science experiments, posting to the park's Facebook page:

"An employee's posting of frying an egg in a pan in Death Valley was intended to demonstrate how hot it can get here, with the recommendation that if you do this, use a pan or tin foil and properly dispose of the contents. However, the Death Valley NP maintenance crew has been busy cleaning up eggs cracked directly on the sidewalk, including egg cartons and shells strewn across the parking lot.

This is your national park, please put trash in the garbage or recycle bins provided and don't crack eggs on the sidewalks, or the Salt Playa at Badwater."

Woman's mock arrest ends with marriage proposal

Written By Unknown on Sabtu, 13 Juli 2013 | 22.55

A Saint John man is hoping an unusual wedding proposal, which involved a fake arrest of his fiancée, could lead to dream wedding next year in St. Andrews.

Ben Vienneau and his brother-in-law, who is a police officer, arranged to stage what they called, "a 10-29 … a marriage proposal in progress."

A video posted on YouTube shows the police car pulling over Marcia Belyea's truck and an officer asks for her licence and registration.

The officer then explains she owed more than $2,000 in fines and faced 30 days in jail.

In tears, she was sitting in the back of a police cruiser when Vienneau appeared and the officer offered an alternative arrangement to spending the next month in jail.

"Ben and I have come to an agreement where we've agreed to waive the fine and let you go if you take his hand in marriage," the officer said.

A shocked Belyea agreed and she happily left the backseat of the police cruiser.

After the proposal, Vienneau said he was worried that his plan was going off script. The original plan was to propose to her in her vehicle and not while she was sitting in the back of a police cruiser.

"I didn't expect it to happen that way. I was just as surprised as she was. He came over to me and said. 'Oh, no. I think I took it too far,'" he said.

The engaged couple is now hoping the popularity of their video will mean more votes in a private radio contest where the first prize is a wedding next July in St Andrews worth more than $20,000.

But, even if they don't win, Vienneau and Belyea say they will still get married that month.

Don't ACTUALLY fry an egg on the sidewalk, people. #TheMoreYouKnow foodsafetynews.com/2013/07/death-...DJSusanGucci

The Mitt Romney's campaign for president may done and dusted in America, but on the other side of the world in Kenya, orphans at the Orbit Village Project are breathing new life into the Republican's failed bid.

Dailycaller

Despite President Barack Obama's ancestral Kenyan roots, the children appear to be Romney supporters donning campaign swag donated to the project from the Knox County Romney campaign in Tennessee.

Dailycaller

Cyndy Waters, founder of the Orbit Village project, spoke with the Daily Caller and said she was contacted about the donation by her nephew who worked on the Romney campaign in Tennessee. He felt the hundreds of t-shirts and hats would do a world of good in the hands of Kenyan orphans rather than in charity shops in the U.S.

According to Waters, the campaign gear has helped further political dialogue amongst the school children who admire the way Americans handle elections.

As Kenya watched Obama battle it out in the world arena with Romney for the presidential title, some took the locking of political horns more literally.

Hugh Podmore wants to live with you. Not in a weird way, though. And only if you live in Toronto's west end, and can handle sharing a pad with a kite-surfing would-be Master of Space. Non-smokers only, please.

Imgur

The recent McGill grad is starting a master's degree program at York University in the fall, but doesn't know many people in Toronto. So, like many students looks for a place to live, he posted an ad on Craigslist.

Genteel Rapscallion of a Masters Student seeking Interesting RoommatesYou: Are in need of a roommate, a Garth to your Wayne, a Ron to your Harry and Hermione, a Ringo to your Paul, John and George etc. Someo...

But Podmore decided his request needed a bit more punch, so he posted a series of 37 photos of himself and his whiteboard messages to Imgur.com.

I WANT TO LIVE IN YOUR HOUSE! (But not in a weird way) - ImgurImgur is used to share photos with social networks and online communities, and has the funniest pictures from all over the Internet.

Podmore's slideshow has gone viral, having been viewed nearly 50,000 times.

A link to it was posted to the Toronto section of Reddit yesterday, where it appears Podmore may have found the Janet and Chrissy to his Jack.

Somebody get this guy a roommate! : torontoreddit: the front page of the internet

I knew there was a reason my album started getting so many more views! Thanks All_thingsConsidered, I owe you big time. mrpodmore

I'm considering kicking my wife and kids out of the house just to make room for this guy! section111

You're too kind, but I ain't no home wrecker!mrpodmore

Hey, I believe we still have a room in the place I'm moving out of right now, it's beautiful (only leaving b/c I'm moving in with my partner), $620 for the room, everything included, including internet and cable. Christie and Bloor area (5 minute walk to subway). Message me if you're interested! We're looking for a July 15th or Aug 1st move in. We wanted to go with someone we know but...you seem amazing. collocake

D'aww, shucks, you're too kind! As for the offer, yes! I'm totally interested! I'd also be down with an August 1st move in, especially for that price and location. I'll actually be in Toronto this weekend to visit friends and look for apartments / roommates, maybe we could meet up and I could see the place?mrpodmore

Wait! I want him to marry my daughter!Enigmutt

Can i be your (adopted) daughter for this purpose? Because I think I just fell in lovealliecousins

The link made it to the front page of Reddit yesterday after it was cross-posted to /r/funny, where the reaction was a little different.

The link to the Imgur gallery has been passed around Twitter and Facebook, too, with many praising Podmore's originality and a few offering to shack up with the red-headed Quidditch player.

In the final slides of the gallery, Podmore invites would-be roommates to creep him on Facebook.

So we did.

Here's his current profile picture, a drawing of him as a Canadian Space Agency astronaut from what he calls the "best greeting card of all time."

Justin Bieber reaches the same market audience that we will need to be the next Blackhawks fans.Peter Hassen</div><div>@PJHASSEN @oc_sports It upsets people because fans like me who've been following for 30 years don't get same chance as JB knows 0 playersChicago Sports</div><div>But is touching the Stanley Cup even that big a deal, even if the person doing the touching is Justin Bieber? Certainly, NHL players -- a superstitious lot, by and large -- generally avoid touching the Cup unless they've won it. <br><br>But hockey fans touch the Cup and its official replicas all the time. Seabirds get comfy at abandoned St. John's supermarket

A seabird specialist has some advice for people walking near a small colony of terns in the middle of St. John's: walk softly and carry a small stick.

The terns, which are better known for being seen in oceans and wetlands, have been nesting on the roof of an abandoned Dominion supermarket on Ropewalk Lane. The property's owner, Loblaw, has opted to leave the property undeveloped.

The birds have been diving at pedestrians in the area.

Memorial University professor Bill Montevecchi said it's unusual for terns to set up house in such a place, but people can easily deter them.

He recommended carrying a small stick, and hoisting it if a tern comes near.

"You can hold a stick over your head, and a bird will never will never come lower than the stick, if that gives people a bit more comfort," Montevecchi said Wednesday.

"That's an option."

Montevecchi said rather than get upset about the seabirds, people should instead accept them. He said he was pleased to see them around the city.

The terns aren't the only winged creatures that have been known to dive at pedestrians lately. This spring, crows were swooping near people outside the Anglican Cathedral in downtown St. John's.

Google Glass captures arrests made on Jersey boardwalk

Written By Unknown on Selasa, 09 Juli 2013 | 22.55

A man is filmed being arrested on the Wildwood, New Jersey with a spectator's Google Glass headset. (chrisbarret/YouTube)

An American filmmaker recorded what's being called the first ever fight and arrest recorded with Google Glass, and it's raising more questions about the possibility of being unknowingly recorded in public places.

Chris Barrett took his Glass headset out to the Boardwalk in Wildwood, New Jersey on July 4 when he came across a brawl.

"Tonight, I was testing out the extended video recording option with Google Glass on the Boardwalk of Wildwood, New Jersey," explains Barrett in the video's description. "I walked right into the tail end of a fight happening on Jersey Shore boardwalk and filmed the first arrest through the lens of my Google Glass."

In the four-minute clip Barrett uploaded to YouTube, crowds fill the boardwalk during July 4 celebrations. Barrett told VentureBeat that he was filming a fireworks presentation when a crowd nearby caught his attention.

Indeterminate noise and chatter fills the clip. Revellers appear to gather around several men involved in a fight, although the large crowd obstructs Barrett's view of anything other than a handful of people shoving each other. Members of the crowd chant "U.S.A.!" Minutes later, police arrest one shirtless man and walk him away in handcuffs. One other man was cuffed arrested later in the video.

"This is a huge step in citizen journalism," Barrett said. "If Google Glass takes off, everyone's going to have their entire life captured ... first words, first steps ... but also people getting shot, and natural disasters." He called the video "proof that Google Glass will change citizen journalism forever" in the YouTube page's video description.

Barrett says he was able to record everything that night largely unnoticed. "Only two people stopped me on the boardwalk, asking about Google Glass," he told VentureBeat. "I don't think the general population knows what it is yet."

A Google Glass headset can certainly be more difficult to notice than holding up a phone to record a video - especially at nighttime. Commentators are debating whether this seemingly innocuous episode is a sign of greater privacy concerns.

"More notable than the video itself is the ease at which it was captured without the knowledge of those in the middle of the melee," writes tech and science blogger Christophe Gevrey. "His footage foreshadows the rapidly approaching future where everything can be filmed serendipitously by folks wearing devices like Google Glass without the knowledge of the parties involved."
"For every alleged step forward there is often a concomitant step into discomfort. For every citizen journalist, there might also be a citizen snoop," writes CNET's Chris Matyszczyk. "For all those who believe that Google Glass might represent greater (and more covert) intrusion in their lives, this footage might serve to increase their discomfort."

Are you concerned about privacy with the advent of Google Glass? Does it represent a new shift in citizen journalism?

Snake on Toronto storm-stricken train caught on video

A passenger aboard a flood-crippled Toronto commuter train captured video Monday of a snake slithering between the seats.

CBC viewer Ben Bahreini was one of about 1,400 passengers aboard a northbound GO Transit train forced to stop as a massive flood hit the city during Monday's evening commute.

The train left downtown Toronto headed for Richmond Hill at 5:30 p.m. About 30 minutes into the journey, the train became bogged down as a downpour hit the region with record floods. The water soon rose above the level of the train's wheels, forcing it to stop.

With the train bogged down on the tracks near Bayview and Pottery Road, water began seeping into the coach, forcing passengers to pull up their feet or move to the coach's upper seating area.

With chest-high water surrounding the train, the passengers could do nothing but try to stay dry while awaiting rescue in sweltering humidity.

About 30 minutes later, the situation became more surreal when Bahreini saw a snake slithering over the surface of the water.

"I texted my wife and said 'there's a snake on the train,'" Bahreini told CBC News. The incident reminded stranded passengers of a 2006 film starring Samuel L. Jackson.

"People were joking about it, saying it's like that movie, Snakes on a Plane," said Bahreini.

To provide proof to his doubtful wife that there was indeed a snake aboard, Bahreini shot a video of it on his cellphone.

Some passengers joked, some 'a bit squeamish'

Bahreini said though some passengers "were a bit squeamish" about the snake, he said its appearance provided a bit of levity for most of the stranded passengers.

Bahreini was rescued from the train at 11 p.m. but it wasn't until 12:30 a.m. Tuesday when the last of the passengers were rescued by police and firefighters using small inflatable boats.

Ambulance officials at the scene said five or six people were treated for minor injuries but did not need to be taken to hospital.

UBC prof crafts Kryptonian tongue for new Superman film

Written By Unknown on Senin, 08 Juli 2013 | 22.55

The language of Superman's home planet of Krypton could soon be spoken by humans here on Earth, thanks to a UBC professor.

Christine Schreyer, an assistant professor of anthropology at the university's Okanagan campus, was hired as a consultant for the new Man of Steel movie released last month.

An expert in linguistics, she helped movie producers develop a new Kryptonian language, creating a vocabulary consisting of about 300 words and working with graphic designers to develop a Kryptonian script.

"Because Superman is such a large franchise, there are so many things to look at," Schreyer said. "We looked at names previously used in the comic books, and movies and TV shows to see what kind of sounds were available."

Schreyer said her work with indigenous communities who want to revive ancient languages helped with the process.

And, her familiarity with made-up languages, such as Star Trek's Klingon and the Na'vi language devised for 2009 film Avatar, also provided a starting point in helping her understand how other linguists have created languages for movies.

Schreyer said she also lay down the foundations for Kryptonian grammar.

"We changed the sentence structure from English, which is subject, verb, object, so it would be subject, object, verb. Then looked at how words could be made from the sounds we had chosen."

In the end, the scenes where the language is spoken were cut in the film, but Schreyer says the language is far from dead.

Her work is evident whenever Kryptonian script appears on uniforms, weapons and spaceships throughout the movie.

Schreyer also says she is now in the talks with Warner Brothers to create a guide to speaking Kryptonian for the superfans who are interested in learning.

Google doodle marks Roswell UFO anniversary

Monday's Google doodle marks the 66th anniversary of an alien crash-landing on Earth, depending on what you believe.

On July 7, 1947, an airborne object crashed to Earth near Roswell, N.M., kicking off decades of conspiracy theories and accusations of government cover-ups.

On July 8, 1947, a U.S. Air Force spokesman said a "flying disc" had crashed near Roswell, but later that day, an Air Force general said that the object was just a weather balloon. The rapid reclassification, coupled with the original press release's repeated references to a "disc," helped fuel public fascination with flying saucers.

Decades later, the Roswell incident remains shrouded in mystery. Today, Google lets you play a role in it.

In this version of the infamous event, a flying saucer has indeed crashed on a farm, and in a short, B-movie-style video game, you control an alien visitor rushing to rebuild his saucer and escape Earth.

Since you're flying alone in the game, it's presumably some other unlucky pilot who appears in those alien autopsy videos.
